Achievements / Skills
Events, projects, equipment, and products I’ve been glad to be associated with, and skills collected on the journey.
A brief list and outline, with full details elsewhere on this website.
Achievements
Magnox, Cameron Subsea, and Robdale.
Implemented 3D CAD Design methods in 3 companies saving £400k and 4 months on a nuclear decommissioning project with Magnox Ltd.
The other two were Cameron Subsea, and Robdale, and the benefits were seen to:
1. transform the level of team and stakeholder interpretation of proposed design concepts right from the start by using the 3D CAD images as a powerful communication tool for ideas and progress reporting.
2. maximise the value of 3D data by enabling collaborative working with internal and external parties,
3. optimise progress by using the early phase 3D CAD data and maturing it further to deliver all subsequent project Drawings, GAs, BoMs and use 3D CAD images within procedure docs to improve their useability.
Thales
Appointed as the initial configuration item owner (CIO) for a significant upgrade to an essential but aging helicopter mounted Radar scanner head.
Key qualification documents and 3D design definition updates allowed the unit to be better placed to meet its updated primary design requirements.
Meggitt
Promoted to become SAP business process owner in an ERP IT upgrade from their old ‘ManMan’ IT system.
Delivered the objectives from concept to ‘GoLive’ for SAP’s PLM module: defining functionality, refining processes, and training 60% of the department personnel for 2 UK sites – Basingstoke, and Rugby.
Many ‘First of a Kind’ designs:-
• A purge trolley and wet waste transfer system. (Magnox.)
• Wind turbine crane and ergonomic access. (NEG Micon.)
• Cigarette production tray handling machine. (Molins.)
• Food wrapping machine customisation. (Mars.)
• Paper reel wrapping machine upgrade. (Robdale.)
• Wing-pod directional radar head. (Marconi.)
Other
Created a 3D AutoCAD tutorial website and achieved excellent Google results on merit – several entries on first page without resorting to ‘paid-for’ search results! Also created a decision analysis website for assessing complex choices.
Skills
Gained by exposure to the best practices each industry sector has to offer.
Engineering and Design
> Full ‘cradle to grave’ experience ranging from 3D design concepts and functional scope definition documents, through to prototype build / equipment installation
> Drawings: Assembly, general arrangement (GA) and part drawings (with GD&T) using 3D CAD systems (Inventor, AutoCAD, PTC CREO, CADDS 5, and Alibre)
> Using reviewing tools: Navisworks, and Autodesk Design Review
> Bills of Material: defining part numbers and assembly structures
> Configuration Control / Change Control: ECRs and ECNs, on PDM / PLM tools in both Revision controlled, and form / fit / function controlled design environments
> Feasibility studies, installation checks, and reviews for each design
> Material and component selection: select, evaluate, and assess items ranging from raw materials grades, and low value components through to selection of £500k capital equipment items. (Filter press.)
